Jacob became a Doctor and served in the Civil War as an Assistant Surgeon in the 109th Pa. Vol.. Jacob and Susannah lived in the Mifflinburg area until sometime after 1860 when they moved to Philadelphia, Pa.. They were living there in 1882 and 1892. Both husband and wife were laid to rest in a vault in the Old Lutheran and Reformed part of the Mifflinburg Cemetery. They had 7 children.

12g)5.GEORGE H. HASSENPLUG-Born 25 October 1832 in Mifflinburg, Pa., Died 5 February 1886 in Hampton, Va.. He is the 5th child of Johan Wilhelm (William) ans Susannah (Holtzman) Hassenpflug. Married 21 October 1858 to Susannah Kleckner-Born 28 January 1839 Died 30 December 1859. There is an informative article in "Juniata and Susquehanna Valleys in Pennsylvania", part of which states: In 1850, George and his brother Jesse and a Mr. Boop started for California in search of gold. They went by boat to Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Fort Independence. There they procured teams and in company of many others, crossed the great plains. They arrived without incident and immediately entered the mines. They were moderately successful but after several months, they decided that Pennsylvania was as good a place to live as the mines of California. They returned home by way of the Isthmus, arriving in New York about a year after they left, and without any more money than they left with. After his return George went to Danville, where he worked in his brother's (William) store. While in Danville he joined the Columbia Guards and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant by Governor Bilger on 2 November 1854. On 19 June 1859 he was commissioned as quartermaster with the rank of Major by Governor Packer.George had stores in Mifflinburg, Spring Mills and Troxellville at various times in his life. He organized the Cameron Guards in which he served as Captain. Captain George participated in the battles of Roanoke Island, Newbern,N.C., Marye's Heights at Frederickburg, Vicksburg and Jackson,Miss.. He was mustered out on 13 June 1864 after more than 3 years service and in poor health. He was an ardent Republican.George and his wife Susan had 1 son who died in infamcy.

Captain George Hassenplug remarried on 25 April 1867 to Miss Esther Sloughof of Freeport, Ill.. She was born around 1834 in Lycoming County, Pa.. Both George and both wives are buried in the Mifflinburg Cemetery. No children.
